Hidden River Outfitters

Many paddling and rowing groups offer instruction and opportunities to get out on the water. Following is just a sampling of what’s out there.

Philadelphia Canoe Club

The Philadelphia Canoe Club offers courses in both canoeing and kayaking for all skill levels. Training selections include flat and moving water canoe, touring and sea kayak, whitewater canoe and kayak, and safety and rescue. Courses follow the American Canoe Association guidelines and curricula for safety and training.

Hidden River Outfitters

Hidden River offers personalized kayaking instruction classes in BCU and ACA formats. Regularly scheduled kayak instruction classes include:

  • Kayak Quick Start - A course for those new to kayaking
  • Introduction to Kayaking - Basic strokes and skills
  • Essentials of Kayak Touring - Travel safely and efficiently in your kayak
  • Coastal Kayak Basic Strokes and Rescues - Safe travel and rescue

Mount Airy Learning Tree

For nearly thirty years, Mt. Airy Learning Tree (MALT) has been offering community-based classes that range from recreation to crafts to cooking to computers. Their water recreation offersings regularly include courses in kayaking, dragonboating and rowing.

Fairmount Park Rowing Camp

Offered through Fairmount Park, this program offers young adults living in Philadelphia the chance to learn the sport of rowing. There is no fee for the rowing camp. Participants must be between the ages of 13 to 17 and be able to pass a required swimming test. A number of sessions are offered throughout the year.
